Investing in Soma Energy: Making Every Megawatt Count

We’re excited to share that Uncork Capital co-led Soma Energy’s $7M seed round alongside Category Ventures, Haystack, and other great investors.
If you spend time around AI infrastructure, one constraint comes up repeatedly: power. Not chips, not models, but electricity. The limiting reagent of the AI economy is increasingly measured in megawatts.
The numbers are stark. Bloomberg estimates U.S. data center demand could exceed 100 GW by 2035, up from 20 GW today. The growth is staggering. Yet the underlying grid infrastructure - generation, transmission, interconnection - moves on 5 to 10 year timelines. AI does not.
Soma Energy is built around a simple but powerful insight: the bottleneck isn’t only a shortage of supply, it’s a failure of orchestration.
Rather than waiting years for new infrastructure, Soma unlocks capacity that already exists. Their platform sits at the orchestration layer of the grid, using machine intelligence to optimize across generation, storage, and load in real time. For data centers, this means faster time-to-power. For producers, lower volatility and higher asset utilization. For the grid, greater flexibility without massive capital buildout.
What makes Athanasios (“Ath”) Caramanolis, the Founder & CEO of Soma Energy, and his team exceptional is that they’ve lived this problem at scale. Ath ran grid optimization for AWS, where he was the world’s largest buyer of electricity (let that fun fact sync in). The team built and operated the systems behind gigawatts of power procurement and optimization. They’ve navigated interconnection queues, negotiated billion-dollar energy contracts, and managed the operational complexity of power at hyperscale.
Our view at the seed stage is straightforward: we back exceptional teams, building cutting edge products, for big ass markets. Soma checks all three. A world-class team with direct, hard-earned experience, leveraging modern AI to tackle a market constraint that is both urgent and inevitable.
Electricity has always been a fragmented system - large plants, distributed generation, storage layers, and increasingly dynamic demand. The next phase of the grid will not just be built, it will be orchestrated.
Soma Energy is helping make every megawatt count.
