Ship APIs, Not Infrastructure: Welcome Unkey

Every developer has lived some version of this story: you've got a great product idea, your API is the core of how it'll work, and then you spend the next three weeks wrestling with an API gateway that was designed for a world where "deployment" meant filing a ticket with your infrastructure team. Rate limiting? Manual configuration. Key management? Hope you like YAML. Role-based access control? Good luck, bring snacks.

The legacy players - the Apigees and Kongs of the world - were built for a different era of software development. They assume you have a dedicated DevOps team, an existing cloud environment, and the patience of a saint (or at least a very well-caffeinated SRE). For the modern full-stack engineer who just wants to ship a product with a well-managed API, these tools feel like driving a forklift to the grocery store.

In situations like this, we search for founders who look at an entrenched, sleepy market and say, "We can do this ten times better, starting from first principles." Enter James and Andreas, co-founders of Unkey.

Unkey started life as an API platform for full-stack engineers who were tired of wrestling with infrastructure just to ship an API. Rather than bolting on an external gateway between your code and the real world, Unkey's lightweight SDK lives directly in your codebase. Add a single dependency, drop in a few lines of code, and suddenly you've got rate limiting, key management, and RBAC baked in (with minimal added latency, which is the kind of detail that makes engineers actually smile).

Now they're going bigger. Unkey Deploy is a platform for shipping APIs without all the infrastructure baggage. Push your code and Deploy handles provisioning, scaling, routing, and observability on real servers (not serverless), so you get predictable performance, zero cold starts, and none of those fun runtime constraints you'd otherwise spend a week coding around. Every deployment sits behind Sentinel, a managed reverse proxy that enforces authentication, rate limiting, firewall rules, OpenAPI validation, and logging on every request before it touches your app. Each environment gets its own isolated Sentinel instance (three replicas in production, one in preview), with in-region routing and load balancing across healthy instances, so a misconfigured policy in preview can't bleed into prod. The short version: ship APIs, not infrastructure.

Here's what Unkey customers are doing with the platform today:

  • Eliminating latency from legacy gateways. One customer migrated from Apigee and shaved 65-70ms off every API request - a meaningful difference when you're serving AI inference at scale.

  • Managing token budgets for generative AI. As every API call to an LLM consumes costly tokens, Unkey gives developers native tools to track, monitor, and limit token usage per customer or team.

  • Shipping faster with smaller teams. What used to require a backend team, an infra team, and a frontend team working in concert, a single full-stack engineer can now handle with Unkey's SDK.

  • Scaling usage-based pricing painlessly. With built-in support for attaching multiple keys to a single organization, billing at scale becomes a feature, not a fire drill.

Unkey's co-founders bring exactly the right backgrounds to this problem. James is a developer's developer - self-taught, with deep experience in developer relations and API product development from his time at Plaid and Clerk. Andreas is a deeply technical open-source builder who cut his teeth on rate limiting and serverless messaging products as an early engineer at Upstash. Together, they've already built a thriving open-source community alongside a growing commercial product (with bonus points for the kind of developer craftsmanship that earns genuine love, not just adoption).

Today I'm excited to announce that Uncork Capital has led Unkey's $4.5M seed round, alongside our friends at Essence VC and Sunflower Capital. We couldn't be more thrilled to partner with James, Andreas, and the whole Unkey crew as they build the modern API platform that developers actually deserve.

Welcome to the Uncork portfolio - here's to deploying what comes next.
